Beautifully destroyed series update…..

Posted March 30th, 2010 at 05:31pm by Risky

Recently I was asked how the beautifully destroyed series came about, here’s the short version….

As young writers pioneering the graffiti scene in Los Angeles, freeways were our answer to Subway Trains in New York. In New York all the commuters rode subways. The writers were making social commentaries to the public on big steel canvases. We were the same youth striving to be heard here on the West Coast. In Los Angeles all the commuters drive on the Freeways. We were making our mark via urban expressionism on these big cement canvases along the sides of the freeway. The thing we had in common was  the need to get up, to be heard and or seen. To force society to recognize us and what we had to say or contribute. Now keep in mind to be heard you don’t have to write political messages. A splash of color can speak a thousand words on some mundane dilapidated building or surface. Its kind of funny when I think about years of painting these elaborate pieces with all these interlocking letters etc. I was always entranced with the final picture as a whole. The color on the surface. The total coverage, or piece placed strategically on the sprawling urban jungle. And now I have started a series called “Beautifully Destroyed by Risk”…It is a wash of color on these specific totally mundane items. Even transforming traditional paint jobs. I.E a house or a car to a wash of color.
I have traveled thousand of miles on these intertwined freeways and streets painting these interlocking pieces… its like I’ve traveled artistically thousand s of miles to get to my destination of figuring out what I want to express… I’ve finally figured out the deconstruction process that leads you to a refined final project…..

Beautifully destroyed series #5 Santa Cruz….

I recently stayed with some friends while discussing a future gallery gig in Santa Cruz. They were having a Cinco De Mayo Mustache party in their recently new and improved artists hacienda commune. When I woke up I went out and started painting the Zen Den I was staying in. The canvas started creeping and by the time the party started five were completed. Here’s a couple shots… More coming soon….

SOON

Posted March 22nd, 2010 at 12:30am by Risky

If you know anything about the birth of LA graffiti you definitely have heard of Soon! You probably also heard he died years ago. Well hope your sitting down. He is alive and doing well. The myth about Soon dying in jail is not true. I recently just talked to my man. He had some legal issues which made him hit the road, but it’s all over now. I’ll let him tell his own story on here later. I just wanted to show you people a couple classic shots. He was light years ahead of anyone in LA at the time. SOONONE LIVES!

SOON 439This piece was at the Pan Pacific in early 83. notice the two purples together, Krylon Icy grape and Rusto federal safety purple…. Shit was hot!

Soon Venice Blvd warehouseThis piece was in that warehouse we stumbled across with the Futura and Lee stuff I posted up last week.

soon_in NYThis was a rare photo of a soon piece in New York. This photo has the round edges and matt finish, good old 110 camera! This piece was probably 92. Soon lived in New York before moving to LA.
